Crowns Q & A

  • Dental Veneers

Dental crowns are tooth-colored porcelain caps that cover the entire visible portion of your tooth. They’re among the most popular restorative treatment options, and they also have cosmetic benefits.

Dental crowns can help strengthen teeth that are:

    • Cracked
    • Chipped
    • Worn down
    • Severely decayed
    • Misshapen
    • Discolored
    • Broken

Crowns are also the visible portion of dental implants and bridgework.

  • What materials are crowns made of?

You can choose from various materials for your new crown, and each option has a set of pros and cons.

    Metal

Metal crowns are made of alloys and are incredibly durable. They’re good options for molars where the most force occurs during chewing. Metal crowns are also less expensive than other options.

    Porcelain over metal

These crowns merge the durability of metal with the aesthetics of porcelain. They cost less than porcelain crowns but can chip or break over time. It’s also possible for a portion of the metal to show at your gum line if your gum tissue recedes.

    Resin

Resin is affordable and creates a tooth-colored crown, but resin is also the weakest material option. Resin crowns are more likely to fracture than other material choices.

    Porcelain

Porcelain crowns are beautiful, durable, and offer the most natural appearance. They’re also among the most expensive material types, but they’re a great option for men and women with metal allergies.

  • What is the process for getting a dental crown?

During your initial visit, Dr. Emdin examines your teeth and gathers images to determine the extent of the damage. She addresses any areas of decay before removing a small portion of your tooth enamel to make room for the crown.

She takes impressions or digital images to send to the dental lab. That data helps the dental technicians create a custom crown that matches the shape, size, and color of your surrounding teeth. You receive a temporary crown to wear while you wait for the permanent version to arrive.

Then, you return to Dr. Emdin and she checks your new crown for proper fit and comfort. When you’re both happy with the fit, she cements the crown into place. Your restoration is now complete, and your crown looks and performs just like your natural teeth.
